Class B Welder


Sypris Solutions, Inc.


Sets up welding equipment and prepares materials for welding. Aligns, tacks and joins by welding, using processes and positions as required for this classification, to the assigned inspection requirements. Uses welding fixtures, positioners, jacks, cranes and material handling equipment. Arc gouges, grinds, and buffs to clean and blend for quality weldments. Repair weldments, changes tips, drive gears, conduit liners, welding gun assemblies and gas bottles. Receives instructions from supervision, process sheets, routings, welding specification sheets, drawings and /or job layouts. Methods are usually prescribed or standardized but the welder may select and vary techniques within the limits of the recognized procedures. Reads and interprets x-ray films to determine the best method to repair indicated defects. Uses standard measuring instruments and dye check equipment. Completes the forms required to record welding information.


Within 6 months of entry into the classification, qualification is required in the following areas of work:

Process: SMAW-MA, Position: 6G, Q.C. Requirement: LP, MP, ASME X-RAY OR OTHER APPLICABLE CODES;
Process: GMAW-SA, Position: 2G & 3G; Process: FCAW-SA, Position: 3G.

NOTE: DUE TO THE CRITICAL NATURE OF THE WELDS, THREE (3) CONSECUTIVE FAILURES ON ANY ONE TEST FOR THE MATERIALS, PROCESSES AND POSITIONS SPECIFICALLY NOTED IN THIS JOB DESCRIPTION WILL BE CAUSE FOR DISQUALIFICATION FROM THE WELDERS CLASS B CLASSIFICATION. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Ability to define problems collects data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Must have exceptional ability to concentrate and fine skill on complex machinery. Regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. Occasionally required to climb or balance. Must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and /or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.



Work Schedule

Other — Union environment so must be open to any shift. Currently working 2 shifts and could move to 3 shift if ever necessary.

Required Education

High School Diploma — One (1) year experience as a qualified welder. Two (2) to three (3) years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
