As a key member of the Aquatics team, this position supervises daily pool activities for patrons and is responsible for proactive communication and maintaining a safe pool atmosphere while preventing accidents. The purpose of this position is to provide a safe environment for members and program participants.ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Uphold the Mission of the YMCA
· Maintains constant surveillance of the pool area
· Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures
· Completes all related reports as required by the YMCA of Greater Louisville
· Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area
· Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the local Health Department code
· Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed
· Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving
· Performs chemical testing as required by the Aquatics’ Director
· Attends all staff meetings and training as required by the Aquatics’ Director
· Maintains effective relationships with the members, participants and other staff
· Maintain all certifications as required to keep the Lifeguard certification current
· Work all assigned shifts and/or follow appropriate substitution policies
· Attends all staff meetings and training as required by the Aquatics’ Director. Requirements

Model the YMCA character values.· Minimum age of 16
· Current lifeguard certifications required (including Jefferson County Board of Health if required)
· Excellent oral and written communication skills
· Previous lifeguard and/or swim instructor experience preferred
· People centered, service oriented
· Team player with personal commitment to the YMCA Mission, Philosophy, & Character Development Values



PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
· Ability to pass lifeguard water test
· Must be able to remain alert
· Work in a wet/humid environment and come into contact with chlorine
· Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods
· Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals
· Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision
· Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue
· Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations
· Environment may include indoor and/or outdoor pool conditions
· Ability to lift 25 pounds
· Noise level-High
