Description

Library assistants fulfill a variety of purposes within the library such as helping students who need computer assistance, shelving library resource materials, processing new library resource materials, working on stacks maintenance projects, making IDs, processing and receiving payment for printouts, and helping maintain a clean and organized work environment.

Job Duties
• Maintain clean and organized work area
• Greet patrons as they enter
• Keep accurate count of patron printouts
• Receive and process payment for patron printouts
• Answer patrons’ questions about library services and resources
• Direct and refer patrons to proper persons or departments
• Provide directions to patrons looking for other departments
• Provide basic computer assistance
• Provide assistance with photocopy machine
• Make IDs for students, faculty, and staff
• Shelve books, CDs, DVDs, magazines, and newspapers
• Ensure books, CDs, DVDs, magazines, and newspapers are in correct order
• Find library resource materials that are marked lost
• Process new library resource materials
• Keep statistical record of services provided during each shift
Occasional Job Duties
• Heavy lifting
• Intensive cleaning

Requirements

Upon hire, library assistants must have the following KSAO’s:

After hire, library assistants must learn the following KSAO’s:
• Knowledge of the Library of Congress Classification System
• Knowledge of US currency
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office
• Knowledge of JCTC downtown campus
• Ability to navigate JCTC’s website

Work Schedule

Flexible - Will work with applicant — Schedules of each library assistant can be customized to accommodate their class schedule and other responsibilities. However, schedules must be restricted to the library’s operating hours, which are: Monday–Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m, and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Hours will vary in between semesters and during summer months.
