Museum Specialist

Assists in Louisville Water Tower Park operations and marketing, educational programming, and tours at Louisville WaterWorks Museum.

Provide a welcoming, hospitable environment and learning experience to museum visitors through guided tour at the WaterWorks Museum.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Greet and welcome visitors upon their arrival to the facility and explain the visitor experience.

Collect admission fees, conduct cash and credit card transactions, retail sales, and facility use fees and rental agreements.

Conduct walking tours approximately one (1) hour in length. Be comfortable speaking to small and large groups of people of varying ages and abilities.

Assist with conducting education experiences that can include hands-on activities with families and children and special programming for adult audiences.

Provide information via telephone and social media.

Complete maintenance duties, including daily and routine cleaning of the facility. This can include sweeping, dusting, vacuuming.

Assist in creating documents, spreadsheets and research for the WaterWorks Museum operations.

Assist in events functions as needed, including showing the facility to potential renters, and setting up and tearing down service items such as tables, chairs and temporary exhibit items.

Generate opening and closing reports; operate business software for cash management.

Open and close the museum, following established procedures.

Perform other related duties as assigned.


Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time and able to navigate the entire guided tour route up to 6 times per shift. The route includes steps, uneven pavement, inclines, both grass and paved surfaces, in indoor and outdoor environments for most of a routine work day. Must be able to lift, carry and/or move the maximum equivalent of 20 lbs.
Physical flexibility and range of motion to complete a deep-kneed bend, full-waist bend and over-head reach.

Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) with a variety of age groups.
Ability to maintain flexibility; work with frequent interruptions and changing priorities.
Ability to work with minimal supervision in a team environment.
Knowledge of historical interpretation and procedures
Ability to follow established security, safety and standard operating procedures for staff and
visitors, including emergency situations.
Ability to open and close the site.

Proficient in Microsoft programs (Excel, Word).



Work Schedule

Set Hours — Part-time, no more than 1,200 hours in a 12-month period. This work does include Friday – Sunday during the day with occasional evening hours. Must be able to work weekends. Workplace is at an historic site, with indoor and outdoor settings. Non-smoking environment.

Required Education

High School Diploma — High School diploma or equivalent. Bachelor's degree preferred. One (1) year of experience in customer service, museum or history site tour guide, working with school groups and/or education outreach organizations, general clerical, cash handling, sales, inventory, and reporting.
