Layout, cut, weld and assemble structural frameworks and housings from materials such as angle iron, I-beams, and plate steel for the fabrication of chassis, trailers and ISO skids. Assemble and attach suspensions and axles to chassis. Cut, grind, drill holes and weld steel to blueprint specifications. Read and follow blueprints and materials list to obtain parts specifications. Lays out parts dimensions on worktable. Cut, drill, shape, and finish for assembly May use plasma cutter to cut I-beams and steel plates Tack welds scrap metal to outline to provide jig for assembly. Positions parts in jig and files, chisels, and grinds parts, as indicated, to weld them together. Tack welds fitted parts together, and then finish welds. Compares dimensions of assembly to blueprint specifications. Anneals parts with acetylene torch to remove stresses of welding. May assemble pre-built suspension systems and axles to chassis. Cleans shop area. Follows daily production schedules outlined by group lead or supervisor Follows clear, well-defined blueprints, sketches, work orders. Proper use of steel fabrication equipment to cut and weld raw material. Works under immediate supervision. Assignments are performed according to specific detailed instructions for easily learned non-specialized or repetitive tasks. Little latitude in decisions. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS: Works with steel, stainless steel, I-beams and plate to produce metal boxes, chassis, trailers, and skids. Steel fabrication tools such as, cutting tools, grinders, drills, plasma cutter, Oxy-acetylene, MIG and TIG welding, small hand tools and clamps. Frequently lift and or move up to 50 lbs by themselves, or heavier with crane/hoist support or assistance. Frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, feel and reach. Specific vision abilities required by this job include: close vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to work near moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to vibration and hoses carrying high pressure compressed gases in the assembly area. The employee is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions; extreme cold (non-weather) and extreme heat (non-weather).The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Various PPE devices & equipment such as cotton/leather/cut resistant gloves, welder’s glove and chemical gloves, safety shoes, hearing protection, safety hats, and welders face shield and safety glasses required.

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. May be certified AWS/ASTM Welding in MIG & TIG. Certified use of overhead crane and steel handling equipment, Hazmat required.
