Americana World Community Center
Americana World Community Center is bridging the gap from surviving to thriving for Louisville’s refugee, immigrant and underserved populations through education, family support, youth achievement, and career and financial development. Each year, we serve more than 5,000 people from over 100 countries in their pursuits of better days and brighter futures. VISTA Summer Associates at Americana will support the Summer Youth Program. The Summer Youth Program is a 7-week program during June and July for school-aged youth to participate in fun, engaging activities to prevent summer learning loss and develop personal interests. The program focuses on six core areas: STEM, Creative Arts, Physical Education, Environmental Education, Literacy, and Computer Literacy. Programming also includes English as a Second Language classes, field trips, swimming lessons, three meals each day, and recreational activities. Summer Associates will assist youth program staff in planning and implementing educational and enrichment activities for youth, coordinating field trips, creating curriculum, and working closely with youth.
Summer Associates will start their service with two weeks of training related to youth development, cultural competency, developing curriculum, classroom management, and working with volunteers. As part of the youth program staff, the Summer Associates will work closely within a team to plan lessons and then implement them. During the Summer Youth Program, the Summer Associates will assist JCPS teachers with the English as a Second Language program in the mornings and lead educational and enrichment activities in the afternoon. Summer Associates will be assigned an age-group or interest area to facilitate activities that incorporate STEAM and literacy skills. Summer Associates will supervise youth, engage volunteers in the program, work with community partners, and keep records of lesson plans. Summer Associates will participate in weekly youth staff and supervision meetings.
